Lumen Local Agent
A small Python program you run yourself. It lets Lumen's agent work on real files in one directory you choose, so it can read your project, propose changes and — if you allow it — write them.
Read this before you download. This program runs on your computer with your user's permissions. Installing it is a deliberate decision, not a default. If any of the terms below are not acceptable, do not run it: Lumen's answer engine, agent mode and connectors all work without it.
What it does
- Registers with Lumen using a one-time pairing code that you generate while signed in.
- Polls Lumen for file jobs belonging to your account, and only your account.
- Reads files inside the single directory you pointed it at when you started it.
- Writes inside that same directory only if you started it with write access explicitly enabled.
What it does not do
- It does not roam outside the directory you named.
- It does not accept jobs from anyone but the account it is paired with.
- It does not stay resident — close it and the access is gone.
- It does not upload your directory. Only the specific files a job asks for are read.
Understand the risk
An AI agent with write access to a directory can change or delete files in that directory. That is the entire point of the feature, and it is also the entire risk. Two rules make it safe in practice, and we mean both of them:
- Point it at a directory under version control, or at a copy. Then a bad edit is one
git diffaway from being undone. - Start without write access the first time. Read-only is the default for a reason — see what the agent proposes before you let it act.
You are responsible for what runs on your machine. We provide the scope controls; choosing a sensible directory is yours.
Run it
# 1. download curl -fsSL /lumen-local-agent.py -o lumen-local-agent.py # 2. read it. it is short, and you are about to run it. less lumen-local-agent.py # 3. read-only, in the directory you choose python3 lumen-local-agent.py --dir ~/projects/my-app # 4. only once you are comfortable: allow writes python3 lumen-local-agent.py --dir ~/projects/my-app --allow-write
It prints a pairing code. Paste that code into Lumen while signed in and the two are linked for that session.
Revoking access
- Stop the program (Ctrl-C). Access ends the moment it stops polling.
- Or unpair from Lumen, which orphans the running agent immediately.
- Pairings also expire on their own, so a forgotten terminal does not stay live forever.
Liability
The Local Agent is provided as part of Lumen under the terms of service, with no warranty beyond what those terms state. We are not liable for changes an agent makes to files you gave it write access to. Terms last updated 2026-05-22.
